Norah Jones

Brooklyn resident Norah Jones didn’t have to travel far from home for her taping of an unforgettable episode of Live from the Artists Den. To celebrate the release of her fifth album, Little Broken Hearts — which entered the US charts at Number Two — she performed for 200 invited guests at the historic Green Building in the Carroll Gardens neighborhood. The rough-hewn beauty of the former brass foundry was a spectacular backdrop for a 20-song retrospective of Jones’s career, ranging from her breakthrough hit, “Don’t Know Why,” to her latest single, “Happy Pills,” before concluding the public television shoot with an encore that saw her and her band gathered around an old-time microphone, offering sweet harmonies to send a delighted audience into the night.

One of the most critically-acclaimed musicians of the past decade, Norah Jones burst into the global spotlight in 2002 with her jazz and soul-inflected debut album Come Away With Me. Winner of eight Grammy awards, the album cemented Jones’s status as one of the most talented vocalists of her generation. Since then, the Brooklyn-born, Texas-raised musician has drifted away from the “jazz singer” label, gradually moving toward a more pop-centric sound. After working with producer Danger Mouse on Italian composer Daniele Luppi’s project Rome, the two again teamed up to write and record Jones’s fifth studio release, Little Broken Hearts, which was released on May 1, 2012 and debuted at the number two spot on the Billboard top 200.

Located a block away from the Gowanus Canal in the historic Carroll Gardens neighborhood of Brooklyn, the Green Building was built in 1889 and primarily functioned as a brass foundry until 1987. A large portion of the brass manufactured on-site was incorporated into Atlantic City’s gambling tables and casinos. Since its acquisition by Akiva Reich & Co., renovations have highlighted the building’s industrial past, exposing the building’s original raw brick walls and beautiful wood beam ceiling.
